The Truth Must Prevail

When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God…My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power. (1 Corinthians 2:1,4-5)

Ever since the fall into sin, people only like God when he agrees with them. Maybe you have caught yourself wishing God had not said this or done that. It is in our nature to rebel and challenge God (Genesis 8:21; Romans 10:7).

When the Dobbs decision returned abortion to the states, we witnessed rebellion. Referendums to overturn strict restrictions on abortions have been consistently successful. Why?

Not only do people call good evil and evil good (Isaiah 5:20), but those are the stories that make the headlines. Even the people of God get drawn into the eloquence of debate, where the truth is often forgotten in lieu of well-articulated opinions.

We are not immune to being swayed. We are not immune to being timid. We are not immune to being thoughtless. Most often, we are an ugly blend of all three. To avoid controversy, to preserve what we have, and to “keep the peace,” we let people decide morality for themselves, regardless of its correctness.

One state protects unborn lives from conception. Another state permits the deaths of unborn children until birth. Which one is right and which one is wrong?

Opinion has been venerated to the level of truth. Truth is no longer an objective reality but a consensus reached by people who have little going for them other than a strong opinion, eloquently presented, and a fan base who agrees.

Paul’s message to the Corinthians reminds us that there is something more than the presentation of an argument. Its value is rooted in truth. And it was Christ himself who said that God’s word is truth (John 17:17).

It is high time for the truth to prevail. Unborn lives are lives that deserve protection. Even if it is a risk for us, it is time we stand for the truth and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8). Debating abortion on the state level requires the active engagement of people who know the truth. Make your voice heard.
