What is Abortion Pill Reversal and How Does It Work?

More than half of abortions in the U.S. are carried out using the “abortion pill,” and this number is steadily increasing. The abortion pill consists of two medications and is approved for use within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. The first medication, mifepristone (also known as RU-486), is used to block the hormone progesterone, which is essential for maintaining a healthy pregnancy. The second medication, misoprostol, causes the expulsion of the pregnancy. However, if a woman regrets taking the first pill, the Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) sometimes offers a chance to save the pregnancy through the reversal process. By administering additional progesterone, the goal is to override and counteract the first pill, offering a chance to reverse its impact and potentially save the pregnancy.

Is It Safe?

Progesterone has been used routinely and safely with pregnancy since the 1950’s. A 2018 peer-reviewed study shows no increase in birth defects and lower preterm delivery rate than the general population.1https://www.heartbeatinternational.org/our-work/apr

For some women progesterone may cause sleepiness, lack of energy, lightheadedness, dizziness, gastrointestinal discomfort and headaches. Increased fluid intake might help relieve these symptoms. It is important that you follow all of the instructions of your APR provider carefully. If you have any questions, please contact your provider.

What are the Success Rates of APR?

  • Initial studies of APR have shown it has a 64-68% success rate.2https://www.abortionpillreversal.com/abortion-pill-reversal/faq
  • 5,000+ lives have been saved.3https://www.heartbeatinternational.org/our-work/apr
