Abortion on the Ballot

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Recent headlines highlight that abortion will be a significant issue in upcoming ballots. Traditionally, Democrats support abortion rights, while Republicans oppose them. Consequently, news stories often discuss how abortion referendums are being used as tools to mobilize voters who support abortion, potentially benefiting one political party over the other.

We often state that abortion isn’t just a woman’s issue. Yet, men are also showing up to protest for abortion rights. This points to a broader problem affecting both genders: our inherent resistance to surrender.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. (Luke 18:22–23)

The Bible often portrays money and prosperity negatively, warning that they can lead to arrogance and a false sense of entitlement (Romans 12:3; Revelation 3:17). We either become so accustomed to wealth and success that we presume a natural entitlement to it, as we do to other natural resources. Or, if we earned it, we are tempted to generate arrogance predicated on our success.

American ideals like prosperity and freedom, while initially positive, can become distorted to serve our sinful natures. When it comes to abortion, we may focus too much on our personal rights and entitlements, forgetting our duty to serve and honor God.

You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. (1 Corinthians 6:20)

Like the rich man who left Jesus sorrowful, many people are so engrossed in their material wealth and independence that they neglect to ask how they can act in a way that honors their Creator, seeking answers through God’s word.

Wealth and independence are not inherently sinful. However, they often tempt us to place them above our reverence for God. Whether the false gods are worldly ideals or self-serving desires, these are ultimately heart issues that can be resolved through Christ and clarified through scripture. God’s word remains our guide for making meaningful and righteous changes. It remains a far more powerful tool for changing hearts and effecting change.

Continue proclaiming the truth of God’s word. Also, live it. In your actions demonstrate surrender to our Creator, rooted in an understanding of God’s love for us in Christ.
