But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15)
Did you ever think that gratitude could be your greatest evangelism tool?
Biblical gratitude works like a magnet, attracting attention because of unexpected action in a self-serving world. Let me explain.
Jesus prophesied, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12). It is in that circumstance, of a frigid world of lovelessness, that he calls upon us to love our enemies, turn the other cheek, walk the extra mile, and give more than what is asked of us (Matthew 5:38-44).
No one comes to me asking about my hope when I am basking in an abundance of worldly blessings. Instead, when hardship is its hardest, sorrow is its saddest, and worldly despair is its greatest, people observe an unexpected hope in a Christian. When there is an empty spot at the holiday table, discord has shattered the family, and hardship has become your lot in life, people will be struck by a spirit of hopefulness in how you live.
The Apostle Paul observed,
If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. (1 Corinthians 15:19)
Christians see beyond the here and now. We know the price paid for our sins and the eternity that has been secured. Even in despair, there is hope. That hope stands out in a world that can’t compete.
Gratitude compels us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. Gratitude moves us to sacrifice for the sake of others, turn the other cheek, and walk the extra mile.
By the world’s standards, some Thanksgiving observances will be difficult unless you see beyond the pain, disappointment, and heartache. In the best and worst of times, we have eternal hope in the God who loves us. For that reason, we can make every day a day of Thanksgiving (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
On behalf of the staff at Christian Life Resources and New Beginnings—A Home for Mothers, may all your days be filled with gratitude and thanksgiving.
