Talking to Your Kids About Chastity

Reading Time: < 1 minute

These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” (Deuteronomy 6:6,7)

Few parents find it comfortable to talk to their children about sex and chastity. Mrs. Susan Bondow gives us this “prescription for the family” (Deut. 6:4-9) which puts the focus on our Savior, the cornerstone of Christian families. To be chaste is to live a virtuous life, to possess or show moral uprightness. This includes thoughts, words and actions. The best way to teach your children to live a chaste life, is to lead by example.

You could give your children a list of reasons to abstain from sex before marriage, including unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and what Mrs. Bondow refers to as sexually transmitted pain. Statistics tell us that couples who wait to have sex until marriage are less likely to experience divorce or adultery. Pay attention to the way your children spend their free time and who they spend it with. Discuss the pressures they may be experiencing, and be open and honest with them. Remind them that sexuality is a gift from God, intended to be part of the marriage union. Let them know that you are praying for them and their future spouses.
