There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. (Proverbs 16:25)
How can professed Christians support candidates who support abortion rights? It is one of our most polarizing issues.
Human Life in the Image of God
Human life is venerated above all other life because it was made in God’s image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27; 9:6; James 3:9). An evolutionary view of life denies this biblical truth. To see humans as a higher or different level of all life and nothing more is rooted in false religious notions. Christians who profess such a position don’t know the full counsel of God. Non-Christians who profess such a position are simply adhering to some philosophical brand of religion of their own creation.
Life from Conception
Life begins at conception (Psalm 51:5; Psalm 139:14-16; Job 31:15; Jeremiah 1:5; Isaiah 49:1; Luke 1:41-44). That means when my wife and I experienced the miscarriage of our first child, we could legitimately say that our first child died (click here to visit the new CLR website page devoted to miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss). That also means, in abortion, a child has died.
Some who advocate for abortion rights think life begins at some other time (implantation, viability, birth). It is a view not supported by God’s Word.
Personhood is a Deception
Sadly, many, if not most, who favor abortion rights understand that in an abortion, a life is lost. They have manufactured a notion of personhood, namely, a legal status that grants protection. In other words, you can have human life, but if it is not recognized as a “person,” it is a life that can be ended legally and unburned with culpability. Again, there is no biblical support for this position. It is just a created notion.
Other Issues
The common argument is that there are more issues to consider than abortion. That is true, but it doesn’t nullify the permanence of abortion. Supporting cheaper childcare, a stronger economy, and improved education MAY reduce future abortions, but advocacy for abortions today WILL end lives. There is the speculative, and there is the certainty.
Abortion is not the only issue, but it is a defining issue. A willingness to permit the killing of our most defenseless lives suggests a character flaw that overshadows almost everything else.
By their fruit you will recognize them. (Matthew 7:16)
