“A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” (Galatians 5:9)
It is often called the “slippery slope.” It is described this way:
“If the camel once gets his nose in the tent, his body will soon follow.”
The smallest step away from the will of God eventually becomes a bigger step, more steps, and then a sprint. Germany’s reclassification of possessing child pornography from a felony to a misdemeanor is one more example.
At one time, possessing any pornography was a crime. Today 90% of children ages 8-16 have seen pornography on the Internet.1https://www.guardchild.com/statistics/ (accessed 5-28-24)
Children who still believe in the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus are encouraged to explore a full spectrum of sexuality and, if they wish, can explore changing their gender – without parental interference.
We were warned.
In 1973, the Humanist Manifesto stated this concerning sexuality:
Short of harming others or compelling them to do likewise, individuals should be permitted to express their sexual proclivities and pursue their lifestyles as they desire. We wish to cultivate the development of a responsible attitude toward sexuality, in which humans are not exploited as sexual objects, and in which intimacy, sensitivity, respect, and honesty in interpersonal relations are encouraged. Moral education for children and adults is an important way of developing awareness and sexual maturity.
When Christians stand against such things, they are as much concerned for the welfare of others as for themselves (Philippians 2:3-5). We err in letting the slide continue.
Progressives sell this new morality as “freedom.” Yet, we know that any step away from God is captivity (John 8:34). Objectively speaking, the ideals of progressivism have no more merit than the ideals of Christianity. Why let progressivism have the floor alone?
While faith in Christ as our Savior is a deeply personal matter, the way we watch out for our neighbor is a deeply public and compelling matter. In a representative form of governing, it demands our vigilance.
There is no rational, historical, or theological reason to think this will end with possessing child porn being a misdemeanor. Greater permissiveness eventually slides into a demand for full and enthusiastic acceptance. The Humanist Manifesto was prophetic and will continue to be so unless people who know the truth speak up. Sin always slides to its lowest point. Pay attention, and for the sake of others, let your voice be heard.
