Plan B: What You Should Know

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What is Plan B?

Plan B, often called the morning-after pill, is similar to typical birth control pills but contains a higher level of synthetic hormones. It is “effective” up to 72 hours after unprotected sex.

How Does Plan B Work?

Plan B is designed to suppress ovulation (stopping the release of an egg from your ovary). It may prevent sperm from fertilizing the egg (this moment is conception – the start of human life!). If fertilization does happen and a life has begun, Plan B has the potential to interfere with the embryo’s attachment to the uterus (thus ending a very early pregnancy and resulting in the baby’s death). If the embryo is implanted before you take Plan B, the drug won’t work and pregnancy will proceed.

What are the Side Effects from Plan B?

Potential side effects that can last for weeks after taking Plan B include1https://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/plan-b:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Belly pain
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Menstrual changes (heavier bleeding or bleeding in between periods)
  • Dizziness
  • Breast sensitivity

How Effective is Plan B?

Statistics indicate that 11% of women who use Plan B still become pregnant.2https://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/plan-b

Could Plan B End a Life?

Yes, if is taken after ovulation it can alter the uterine lining which might prevent the implantation of an embryo (a tiny human life!).

Should Christians Use Plan B?

No, because of the possibility of the drug ending the life of a developing child, Christians should not consider using it.

This ‘information’ on Plan B is at best incorrect and at its core, truly egregious to people seeking advice on safe options. Plan B ONLY delays or stops ovulation, it does NOT interfere with implantation. Perhaps you need to revisit Proverbs 10:9.

Thank you for your comment and concern for accuracy. Current FDA guidance says Plan B One‑Step works by delaying or preventing ovulation and that available evidence does not support an effect on implantation or on an established pregnancy. However, some pro‑life physicians and researchers interpret certain studies to suggest a possible post‑fertilization, pre‑implantation effect, and they continue to raise concerns about embryo loss in those situations.
